View from the Lanai

It is a five minute walk to the pristine ocean waters and to the natural hot ponds (see below), the famous champagne ponds only on the Big Island of Hawaii. The volcano heats the rain water that seeps through the lava rock. It forms an underground river that we tap into like a warm spring of 89-91 degree water for your swimming enjoyment.

Aloha Orchids

While I was preparing for the Blessing of the Land ceremony, I was thinking to myself that it would be so nice to have lots of orchids around to add color to the place.

On Saturday, a neighbor drove up. He said, "I thought you might like these for your party." He brought about 6 five-gallon buckets of orchids of all colors, literally hundreds of orchids! 

Pele Lani's Blessing of the Land

On December 18, I invited new friends and neighbors to a blessing of my land. Forty people showed up bringing gifts of coffee trees, papaya and avocado trees, candles and Aloha spirit. Wow!

The Blessing of the Land is a Hawaiian tradition conducted by a local Kahuna. Kimo, who did the ceremony for me, explained that spirits are on the land and have been here a long time. "Day tink day own da land because they be here long time," he says in his Pigin English. "So, we tell dem, they go way now and Maya own land. Yah?"

Kimo says, "Gran'fadder, tell me to get da salt from all da islands, red salt, black salt and spread da salt in all da corners of da hous an' da land. Tell dem spirits ta go now."

As we walked the perimeter of the property, he sprinkled salt to form a circle around the property. We came full circle around the property to where we started, at the driveway. He handed me some salt and said, "Now, close da circle."

I closed the circle by pouring salt between the two piles to connect them. He lit a match and said, "Wit dis smoke, the spirits are now go 'way." He said to the spirits that their time is over and the caretaker of the land is now Maya and Maya will decide what to do with the land. I got chills all over my body. We walked back toward the house and formed a circle. We had so many orchids that we formed a large circle of flowers on the ground and stood around the flowers. Kimo said a Hawaiian prayer blessing the land and blessing me for taking care of this precious land of Aloha.

Work Study Program:

In 2006, I am beginning a work study program so that students can live on the property for 4 months, learn how to live on a self sustaining property, attend educational sessions in exchange for chores. If you know someone (at least 21 years) who might be interested, direct them to this website.

Dolphin Excursion

In February, I went on two wild Dolphin swims. We go out to deep ocean where the Dolphins are playing. You must try it. It is truly transformative.

The Fabulous Hot Pond

I have an archeological sign-off from the County of Hawaii, so I can dig out my hot pond. In Hawaii, we need to ensure that building and excavation locations are not a potential historical spot. It turns out that my property is on a 200-400 year old lava flow, so it is not likely that anything historical would be found beneath all that lava.

As of March 9, 2006, the HOT POND is done. It still needs landscaping but it is excavated. Big John had to go down about 30 feet with his D-9 to get to the water. Depending upon the tide, I have about 6-8 feet of fresh 90 degree water.

It took about 71 hours to dig it out, going through blue rock (the hardest of lava and is a blue-grey color). There is an out cropping of blue rock on two walls of the pond. That will be a beautiful feature to landscape around.

From Bali

My container will arrive from Bali at the end of May. In this container is all my furniture and one two story bungalow. If you want to see a picture of the design, follow this link and scroll to the bottom.

The joglo, the 150 year old teakwood temple that I will use as a workshop/healing space is being reconstructed in Bali. I have hired an architect and draftswoman to put the design on paper with all of the new structure defined. This is necessary so that I can get a permit to have it constructed at Pele Lani.

It should be approved, constructed, and shipped by Sept. 2006.

The joglo will have a plexi-glass skylight at the top of the pyramid to see the sky. Then directly underneath the skylight, cut into the foundation floor, I will have a 5 foot diameter circle. That circular hole in the floor will have crystals, lava rock and a water feature. I'll cover it with plexi-glass so we can view it and walk on it.

The joglo front will have two 15 foot double-doors on side and a floor to ceiling glass window in the center. As you approach the joglo, you will be able to see the ocean view through the center glass window. To see the architect's concept, follow this link.
